The activity of Ohio State University (OSU) study abroad program students at Azabu University on the second day (May 26, 2016) was doing a veterinary parasitology practical in the morning. The practical class was conducted by Dr. Yasushi Kawakami of the School of Life Science and Environment, and Prof. Ooi Hong Kean and Dr. Kensuke Taira of the School of Veterinary Medicine. The practical involved the detection of anisakids and cestode larvae in fishes. The students were excited and fascinated by the vigorous movement of the worms.
In the afternoon, the students visited the Life Museum of Azabu university (www.azabu-u.ac.jp/sp/life-museum). The students were very much impressed by the well-preserved skeletons of the large animals, the comparison of the skeletons of the various animals as they adapt to their locomotive functions, the display combination of history and science of the university as well as the information being well presented through the exhibits. However, they lamented that the museum would be greatly improved by having more descriptions of the display in English and producing a brochure in English or in other languages. On the contrary, they have also described the museum as impressive, pretty awesome, educational, informative, small but interesting, wide variety of nice collections and having lots of rare skeletons. They hope that the museum will expand in the future and having more visitors, as well as keeping on enriching the minds of others.
The OSU students were then given a lecture on toxicology of mycotoxin by Prof. Yoshiko Konishi of the School of Life Science and Environment, followed by a practical class on toxigenic fungi identification conducted by Dr. Yoshitsugu Sugiura, visiting research fellow of the same school. It was the first time for many of the students to have seen the food toxogenic fungi under the microscope.
