1,細菌や細菌成分を用いた免疫・アレルギー疾患治療用ワクチンの開発
アレルギー疾患の唯一の根治的治療法として減感作療法がある。しかし、この治療法は、アナフィラキシー等の副反応が起こることなどの短所があり、あまり普及していない。本研究においては、この減感作療法に代わる効果的で安全な抗原特異的治療法の開発を微生物や微生物成分を用いて行い、アレルギー疾患に対する根治的治療を開発することが目的である。
さらにその効果や安全性を調べるために、スギ花粉症自然発症ニホンザルや犬を用いた臨床・基礎研究も行っている。スギ花粉症ニホンザルは人以外の霊長類でアレルギーを発症した初めて例で人と同じ症状を示す。犬は人やサルと異なり、アトピー性皮膚炎が主な症状を示すが、少数例であるがくしゃみなどの、呼吸器症状も示すことも分かっている。

2,犬のバイオバンク研究
ゲノムプロジェクトの進展に伴い、イヌの全ゲノム配列情報も2003年に報告された。2005年には犬の個体差に関係する遺伝子の変異である一塩基多型(SNP, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms)を含めたより精密なイヌの全ゲノム配列情報も報告され、犬において網羅的な遺伝子解析が可能になってきた。麻布大学微生物第一研究室が研究資源を保管する拠点となり、全国の獣医大学や動物病院に来院し、確定診断のついた症例から血液(DNAと血清)と症例情報を収集しています。このバイオバンクでは、犬の先天性疾患の原因遺伝子や癌、糖尿病、心疾患などの遺伝性素因に関わる遺伝子、薬剤感受性に関する遺伝子を同定し、将来、大学および二次診療施設のオーダーメイド獣医療として提供することを目的としています。
